The [G 11 / omnidirectional] antenna consists of two bays with 16 [G 05 / dipoles] on each bay. Each dipole is 60" long and 4" thick, tiled at approximately 45 degrees. Signals are transmitted in a generally circular pattern which covers the metropolitan New York area and permits service at distances of up to 65 miles. At the 102nd floor level, the antenna encompasses the top level of the building.
In May, 1985, 12 New York City FM radio stations broadcasting from the Master FM antenna announced the completion of the largest joint project ever undertaken by any group of New York radio stations. After extensive rewiring, the building's original Alford custom-made FM antenna system was rebuilt to increase power levels by nearly 50 percent, from 5.4 KW to 7.8 KW for eight of the 12 stations broadcasting from the building. The cost was approximately $1 million.
